We Speak To Sandra Seeling Lipski About The Evolution! Mallorca International Film Festival 2016

Good Afternoon Lovelies,

And how are you all today? Well, I hope! With the loss of the London Film Festival, it seems the sun has gone away for good. However, the Evolution! Mallorca International Film Festival is running from the 3rd November until the 12th, is about to light our skies with even more film goodness.

Before the big event begins I spoke to the founder and director of the festival, Sandra Seeling Lipski, about what she is looking forward to, why they are honouring Danny DeVito and this year’s message for audiences. Take a look...

Firstly, what have you decided to do with the festival this year to make it different to others?
What differentiates the festival from others, is the international programming, an amazing mixture of international cinema this year hailing from over 20 countries including films with over 18 languages. Also, we are the only Film Festival (maybe even in the world) who offers a Drive-in Cinema.

What is it that you think makes the festival so special?
Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival, is special for a couple of reasons, first of all, its location. Everyone knows, loves, and if they haven’t been wanting to come to Mallorca. Filmmakers are greatly attracted to the Islands scenery, light and infrastructure. It is the perfect place for an international festival, centrally located in Europe, easily accessible from anywhere in the world and the festival atmosphere is set by friendly locals, a vibrant film community, summer temperatures in November and great Mediterranean food.

Which of the selected films are you most looking forward to seeing?
Well, I have seen them all and they are all my babies, I am not only the founder and director of the festival but also head of programming; my favourite job to do. This year we have Germany as our guest country and the first film I have seen this year (at Sundance) was the German Film WILD by female actress/filmmaker Nicolette Krebitz. It is absolutely WILD!

Danny DeVito is being honoured this year. What is your favourite film of his? And what was it about him that made you want to honour him?
Danny DeVito will receive the Evolution Honorary Award this year at the opening night gala November 3rd. The Evolution Honorary Award is given to an iconic and visionary filmmaker who inspires audiences, breaks boundaries, and has created visionary entertainment that has touched generations. Danny DeVito’s tremendous body of work exemplifies storytelling passion and skill. EMIFF is a platform for independent cinema and in the 70’s Danny’s first movies where exactly that independent. He has not only impressed audiences as an actor but also a producer and director. My favourite Danny DeVito Film is probably The War of the Roses (which is also screening in our retrospective section this year) but I do also love him in L.A Confidential… oh, there are so many good ones; he was excellent in One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Finally, have you got a message that you would like to run along this year’s festival?
The Festival focus is about Bridging Cultures and building an international filmmaking network in Mallorca. The program is created to be inspiring and at times provocative, emotionally, socially and politically. I am excited for our film lovers to discover their festival favourites in 2016.
