Good Morning Lovelies,

If you had asked me a year ago if I would be watching a film starring Ronan Keating in a lead role, then I would have probably said no. To me, he is the lead singer of Boyzone and has the best song on the Notting Hill soundtrack. However, this has all changed with the film Another Mother’s Son.

Directed by Christopher Menaul and starring Jenny Seagrove, John Hannah, Ronan Keating, Julian Kostov and Peter Wight, the film shows one mother taking on the Nazis, as she hides a Russian PoW named Feodor, who she refers to as Bill, in her cottage in Jersey.

The film is powerful at placing its leading lady in the front and centre of the role. Seagrove portrays everything you would expect in a mother figure and makes you instantly like Louiza. Her characters life is controlled in many ways but she continues to keep fighting throughout. Something that is shown not just in the script but also Menaul’s direction.

Keating is an unexpected addition to the cast, but he plays the role with a huge amount of excitement. It is as if he wasn’t expecting to be cast and is just working hard to make sure it is his best role on screen. This is seen throughout a Christmas Eve scene, which goes from happy to sad in a matter of moments.

There are however some faults in the film from the flickering between the two emotions. The characters second to Seagrove are often forgotten or brought in as if to fill screen space at times. Her character's story is one that is powerful enough to not need them all the time and this causes the emotions on screen to sometimes become filled with tension. Not great when it isn’t really needed in this war story.

Overall the film is an emotional journey, which has been portrayed well by Seagrove, but let down by some unneeded directions on camera. There so I am giving it...
