Baywatch DVD Review

09:30:00

Good Morning Lovelies,

Unfortunately, I was the generation that missed out on Baywatch when it was first on TV screens. Of course I have heard all about it and have learnt a lot about it through my brothers who watched it each week, but I have never actually sat and watched an episode of the show.

As a 00s child, the latest Baywatch venture starring Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson, is the first time I have experienced those red swimsuits running slow-motion down a beach. And I have to say that it was interesting viewing. The comedy that was meant to be the best of 2017 manages to go on a wild swim that goes off course pretty quickly.

Focusing on preventing the beach they look after being destroyed by a drug dealer and the thugs that work with her to deal the drugs out. Johnson plays lead lifeguard Mitch, whilst Efron plays an ex Olympic athlete called Brody, who must do community service after a stint of drunken accidents. Together, along with their team, they work together to bring down the drug dealer and to restore order to their beach.

Whilst there are a number of funny moments, they are not as big as the team would have hoped. Baywatch is a cult classic, but this film is not going to be able to match this level due to many plot holes and ridiculous moments. The background characters are forgotten more often then not and not included in moments were they could have added comic relief or more interesting storylines.

Efron and Johnson are a great pairing, who do bring laughable moments where Johnson’s Mitch jokes about Efron’s Brody. But they are not able to bounce off each other as the trailers may have suggested, as they are restricted in the ways that they can interact. In fact, there are moments that they are alone for a lot of the plot. It would have been amazing to see them on screen more so, because we know from the press interviews that they work well together. Even if it was ad-libbing.

When taking such an iconic show and turning it into a film care must be taken. Seth Gordon has tried to make this happen, but he is unable to join the likes of 21 Jump Street in making it a success. Instead he joins the long pile of films that burned out fast.

There so, if you are a big Baywatch fan you may want to stay away from this film, for fears it may ruin your beloved show. If you are like me and haven’t seen it before, you may want to stay away in case it ruins all your dreams of what a great show Baywatch seems to be.

Overall I am afraid this film is drowning with this…
